Master Nigel Brophy
Master Nigel Brophy
Master Instructor & Examiner

Master Nigel Brophy has been training in the martial arts for over 35 years. He began his training in Judo for 2 years, before realising that whilst there were a number of good aspects and skills to be gained from this sport it wasn't practical for self defence, which he learned growing up in a tough school environment in New Zealand where he was beaten up habitually for a number of years, after arriving there from his home country of Canada.

His family moved to England when he was 11, and it was here that he then spent a little over 6 years studying Karate & Mantis Kung Fu before joining the British army at the age of 18. At the age of 14 he began training with weights under the guidance of his stepfather, who was a NABBA (National Amateur Body Building Association) coach and brown belt in Judo himself. On joining his regiment (Queens Royal Irish Hussars), he quickly found that there was little to do in a soldiers spare time apart from drinking and getting into trouble. He kept himself to himself and found several martial arts clubs run by military personnel and german civilians, and continued his training for the next 3 years in Ju-Jitsu, Mu-Gen-Do and Aikido.

Of the styles he trained in during his service in the army Nigel enjoyed Aikido in particular. After serving for 3 years, he left the army and returned to training in Kung Fu for a little while, but he trained in Aikido for another 6 years. Nigel had experienced a number of contradictions, which disappointed & disillusioned him, during his training in the traditional martial arts. Because of this hefound he was drawn elsewhere to understand more about training and the effects it had on the body. With the encouragement and guidance of his stepfather he got himself qualified as a bodybuilding coach and senior gym instructor through NABBA.

It was at the age of 23 that Nigel was invited by a friend to "check out" a new martial called Choi Kwang Do being taught in Kingston by Master Roger Koo. He was amazed at the depth of knowledge and practicality of the system devised by the visionary founder of the art, Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi. Nigel was hooked and enroled immediatly in September 1989 (one year after Choi Kwang Do was officially inaugurated in the UK) and very shortly after, was training 5 days a week. Within a year he was an assistant instructor, and after 19 months he achieved black belt and was promoted to Chief Instructor in April of 1991 in recognition of his dedication to the art.

In December of 1991 he took over his first school from fellow student and good friend Bruce Cairney who was returning to his home country of Australia where he has become the number one instructor of Choi Kwang Do.  From this time on Nigel quickly opened his 2nd school in 1992. The following year he opened 2 more, and he opened 2 more over the next 2 years. In 1996 having inspired a number of his students, 6 more schools were opened across the south of England.

In 2001 he was inducted into the Combat Magazine Hall of Fame "for his development of the martial arts in the UK and around the world" He featured on the front cover of Tae Kwon Do & Korean Martial Arts in July of the same year. He was again inducted into the Combat Magazine Hall of Fame in 2003.

In 2006 he was awarded the great honour of the rank of Master Instructor, by founder Grandmaster Choi. Nigel was the first instructor to achieve this rank from white belt in the entire Choi Kwang Do organisation across the world since it's beginning in 1987.

To date Nigel has been directly responsible for the opening of 57 Choi Kwang Do schools across the UK, in addition he has taught and trained in Choi Kwang Do in Argentina, Korea, Malaysia, Russia and the United States.
